Providing consulting on 6LoWPAN, RF, Sensor Networks, 802.15.4, Product and Protocol Design

Proto6, working with Consumers Energy of Michigan, recently demonstrated the viability of using completely standard IP protocols to interconnect sensor modules with stock Apache Webservers.

In the demonstration, using Atmel 802.15.4 radio development boards, end-nodes were configured to transmit HTTP encapsulated data over a multi-hop radio network to and edge-router (also an Atmel development board) which sent the data over ethernet to the Linux/Apache server.

The HTTP packets were carried using standard TCP and IPv6 with 6Lowpan compression over 10 intermidiate radio hops.

The purpose of the demonstration was to show that HTTP and TCP can be used and will work just fine on these low power, low data rate networks - even over multiple radio hops.
